Wednesday 20th November 6:30pm-9pm

The Chartwell Suite, Brighton Metropole

Design Brighton’s November focus is on heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer you a look into our city’s hidden heritage. Launching his new book, Historic England: Brighton and Hove will be author and historian Kevin Newman. Those attending will get the first opportunity to view the unique B&H images from the archive of Historic England which the book features. They will also be able to watch Kevin’s presentation on how the content of the book enriches our understanding of the city’s heritage and discuss the ideas for the future the book provides. After the talk we will enjoy drinks and canapes and you might even like to have a tour with Kevin where we walk around the hotel trying to identify the many shots of the hotel in the book.

To understand where we go into the future, and to understand what’s needed, one needs to have a foundation of the past. Decisions we make on the present are because of our past. Design Brighton invites you to be part of the discussion. So, as engaged members of the community let’s come together to discuss how the city’s past can inform our present and future; bringing forth new ideas for community events, wayfinding and developments.

Simon Cowell has been appointed as Founding Patron of Design Brighton, a festival aiming to celebrate urban design and play a positive part in the rejuvenation of the region.

It may sound rather different to life on the BGT or X Factor set but, in fact, property is close to the Cowell family’s heart, and they hail from the Sussex village of Ovingdean, part of the city of Brighton & Hove.

Simon’s brother John is co-founder of Design Brighton alongside Sophie Law-Smith, while his father Eric was involved in the original development of Brighton Marina, which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year.

Simon said: “Brighton holds a very important place within our family because of my Mum and Dad and the time they lived in Brighton. It has always been a special place for me and my family as they absolutely loved living here! So, I’m obviously thrilled to be involved with Design Brighton.”

Design Brighton will take place from 1-4 April 2020 and is billed as more than just a festival.

It will bring together experts, enthusiasts, educationalists, professionals and businesses who all play a vital role in the design of the urban environment.

With support from the Brighton and Hove City Council and the University of Brighton, it has also launched a partnership scheme with events throughout the year.

Co-founder John Cowell added: “It’s fantastic to have Simon on board, which will really boost the profile of the festival.

“As a family we’ve always been involved in property development and design – and I’m not just talking about judge’s houses!

“Design Brighton is a chance to put something back into an area which means a lot to us all.

“Brighton is a special place with so much potential. Our vision is to create a leading design week celebrating the built environment of the region and to promote its global reputation as a city which has design and diversity at its core.”

We hope you are enjoying the summer heat. Sorry for the radio silence, but its been a busy Summer for the DB team.

As I am sure you are all aware, following the sad demise of our oldest building firm, the refurbishment of the Corn Exchange has necessarily paused. Design Brighton, in its inaugural year 2020, will therefore no longer have its focal epicentre for the conference and exhibition.

So we have decided to take Design Brighton to the streets…

This was our original vision, designed to involve the design community in the same way as Clerkenwell Design Week achieves, capturing the spirit which is Brighton & Hove. We will bring talks, debate and showcases to an intimate network of venues and showrooms within central Brighton to help generate a fervour of collective dialogue around our City’s past, present and future. We will use Brighton itself as a living case study of the challenges facing contemporary cities and seek to inspire visitors to forge new paths to our future. We intend to live stream Talks@DB so that each event can spark off the next creating a hive of activity and purpose. Beyond the city, satellite events will connect across the Greater Brighton region bringing talent within this broader, more sustainable network, into focus.

Coming Soon

We have been developing our members monthly events with the inaugural SmallTalks@DB being held on the 5thSeptember 5:30pm-7:30pm at Platf9rm Hove Town Hall and on the first Thursday of every month thereafter. These are free to attend to our members so make sure you join us and don’t miss out.

Our first council supported, design round table will be held on the 16th October and focus on Boundary Road. We are working with the local Cllr’s and community to develop the brief for this event and tickets will be available shortly.

The new membership and events platform will be launching soon on our website, providing up to date news and events booking. Our members all have a vested interest in the development of our region and have come together to deliver the Design Brighton Festival. In our first year we want achieve something special, but cannot do it without you. Join us.

Shhh….DB, pass it on.

What a Month!

Design Brighton, celebrating urban life and built environment design.

April has been one to remember for the Design Brighton team, forging new relationships and building on existing.

We started with a bang, hosting our membership drive on the 3rd April at the inspirational newly opened Platf9rm Hove town hall.
With sunshine in our eyes we chatted about Design Brighton’s 10 year vision, to position ourselves as the region of choice for delivering national and international design services for the urban realm; providing innovative design solutions for the global challenges we face.

Over the last 3 weeks we have been overwhelmed with positive conversations and membership enquiries that are now attracting the interest of high profile sponsors within the industry.

What’s the membership all about?

“Building a future for our city that works everyone”

Throughout the Design Brighton evolution we have strongly focused on influencing local policy and positively contributing to our regions development. We work closely with community groups, local authorities, planning, architects, consultants, designers and developers to ensure Design Brighton has this influence.

Our aspiration resonates with the Farrell Review:
“It’s not “either/or” any more for the public and private sectors, and we must strive to get the best of both, working together, as one can’t act without the other.”

Leadership should come from within the industry and built environment professionals will learn to connect more effectively to everyday places and in a more meaningful way. This could begin with industry leaders engaging and empowering the public through education and outreach and contributing more to the debate. We should learn from other creative industries like music, fashion, art and film where there is less separation between the everyday and the elite. Built environment professionals have much to gain from increased public interest in the big issues such as the public realm, sustainability and retrofitting and helping to bring about the culture change that is needed.

Design Brighton is now officially announcing new dates of 01-04 April 2020 for the inaugural 4 day festival.

Festival Co-Director Sophie Law Smith explains: “Our original concept was to hold the festival in October this year, but a number of factors have led to us needing to change the dates to April 2020. One element influencing the decision was to wait for the restoration to be completed at our host venue, Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.

“We’ve been delighted with the response from sponsors, partners and collaborators and we’re excited to be able to announce several elements of the festival – our programme is shaping up nicely!”

Andrew Comben, Chief Executive, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, said: “We are pleased to be working with Design Brighton on their inaugural festival. As Brighton’s leading event for the urban environment, we are keen to accommodate Design Brighton and we look forward to welcoming them into our newly refurbished space next year.”

Two key partners have been announced for the festival; mixed-use developer First Base, owners of the Edward Street Quarter development in Brighton, and Building Live, which will host an industry specific event during the festival.

Barry Jessup, Director of First Base, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Design Brighton. The city is undergoing a huge amount of development and this festival will help to not only put Brighton’s world class urban design on the map but will also bring together visionaries to discuss how we can all collaborate and share knowledge to improve the built environment for all.”

One of the exhibitors already confirmed is a new building system by ICF Southern dubbed the ‘Naked House’ which will showcase fixtures, fittings and products and act as a networking hub for attendees throughout the festival.

The programme will include:

Wed 01 – Thu 02 April: Exhibition at Brighton Dome Corn Exchange plus two conference sessions per day focused on the history of urban design and how that can shape current challenges faced by cities across the world.

Fri 03 April: The day will kick-off with a networking breakfast followed by a panel of speakers discussing the future of urban development with a Q&A session.

Sat 04 April: The exhibition will be open to the public on this day, with the aim to provide information regarding home renovation and showcase local companies. This day will also include an educational element to engage children in the construction industry.

The Design Brighton team now have an exciting 12 months lead to fill with events for their members, partners and sponsors. Already programmed in are 4 design consultations with council owned sites, 2 Design consultations with private developer sites of significant local interest, quarterly member only London and Brighton networking events.

To hear more about the opportunities to engage with Design Brighton sign up to our news letter.
